On the 15th of September, Motorola published the list of devices receiving Android Oreo. While the Moto Z series was present, the notable omission was the Moto G4 series of smartphones. Considering how popular the G4 plus was, fans were extremely disappointed. There’s some good news folks. The G4 Plus is receiving the Android Oreo update after all!
Fan’s had all the rights to get agitated as the Moto G4 Plus’ official infographics had mentioned that the smartphone will be updated to Android Oreo. This was not the case for the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Play.
Motorola responded by saying that even though they will stick to their promise and provide Android Oreo to the G4 Plus, the device was never intended to receive the update. The company also clarified that the Moto G family will only receive one major update.
This is what Motorola had to say:
Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.
While it is nice to see Moto respond and provide the update, this also means that the G5 Plus will not get Android P as the company stresses that the Moto G family will get only one major update.
