WhatsApp just announced a new live location sharing feature on its widely used IM service. The messaging service posted on its blog that the new feature is arriving soon on both iOS and Android apps. Live Location sharing is different from just location sharing in that it can be set for a time period. On the other hand, location sharing just allows you to show your location at one point in time.

The new feature is end-to-end encrypted and allows to share positions on a per chat basis. It shows for a limited time and then disappears. That’s pretty much it in this new update. Live Locations sharing became a thing when Google Maps introduced the feature. Then it was adopted by Facebook Messenger and Snapchat and so on.

“Here’s how it works. Open a chat with the person or group you want to share with. Under “Location” in the attach button, there’s a new option to “Share Live Location.” Choose for how long you want to share and tap send. Each person in the chat will be able to see your real-time location on a map. And if more than one person shares their Live Location in the group, all locations will be visible on the same map.”
