iPhone 8 3D Sensing Technology

Yet another rumour about the iPhone 8 has surfaced online and this time its from KGI Security Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He is a very trusted analyst and has made several successful predictions. A report suggests that the iPhone 8 would sport a ‘revolutionary’ front camera and infrared module that can sense 3D space in front of it.

Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the new camera 3D module will be able to merge the depth information with the 2D images taken from the front camera. This has various applications like face recognition, iris scanning, 3D selfies and so on.

It is interesting to note that the camera hardware will use algorithms developed by PrimeSense, which Apple acquired four years back. The sensor will apparently be able to detect the location and depth of objects it can see. Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus already features a kind of depth detection by using the dual rear camera, which causes a bouquet effect.

The Apple analyst says that Apple is years ahead of the Android Competition as far as 3D algorithms are concerned. This proves that the advanced 3D camera sensor will be a unique and a major selling point for the iPhone 8.

The 3D sensing camera technology is set to be a more advanced using a dedicated Infrared transmitter and receiver. The Infrared transmitter will use vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser technology from Lumentum , the front camera will be produced by Sony and the IR receiver will be manufactured by Foxconn/Sharp. The 3D system works by sending invisible IR light signals outwards from the phone and then detecting the signals that bounce back off of objects using the 1.4 megapixel IR receiver.

The iPhone is said to receive a major overhaul this year with lots of interesting rumours. The Flagship iPhone 8 rumoured to feature a 5.8 inch OLED display in a bezel-less all glass design. The Home button is said to be removed and embedded in a virtual “functional area”(which means you will have 5.2 inches of usable screen real estate). The iPhone is also expected to be priced at around $1000 for the base model.

The iPhone 8 is also rumoured to ditch the Touch Id sensor and include other forms of security features like facial recognition technology. This 3D sensing rumour may mean that Facial Recognition is in fact happening on the iPhone 8.
