Whether you have tasted Android’s Oreo flavour or not, here comes the Developer Preview of Android Oreo v8.1. Google has just announced the new update and factory images of the new build are now live. You can expect stable builds of this new version to hit until December.

As is usual, the new update includes nifty little tweaks, and under the surface improvements and not major software changes. By far, the biggest change is the activation of the Pixel Visual Core chip dormant inside the Pixel 2 duo. Google says it will soon be activated in coming months. This chip developed in conjunction with Intel will be responsible for camera-related enhancements. The extra chip compiles HDR+ pics 5x faster at 1/10th the power. It also comes with some AI and machine learning goodness to achieve this effect.

Other changes include small changes to notifications. With Android 8.1, phones will only alert you once per second in case of many notifications. You’ll still see those notifications rather sound alerts will happen only once/second.

Apart from these, there are some changes underneath that we intend to compile in a separate article. Since this is a Developer Preview update, you must be enrolled in the Android Beta program to use the live images. However, you do need an unlocked bootloader. Google will also roll-out the update over the air but the update is compatible with just Nexus and Pixel devices. Here are the devices: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel C, Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel 2, and Google Pixel 2 XL. We advise caution before installing these factory images as there have been issues in flashing them. It would be better to delay till tomorrow.
