Facebook, in a clampdown against fake news, has announced that pages linking to fake news regularly will be banned from advertising on the biggest social media platform on Earth. The social media giant has third-party organizations that do fact-checking and flag stories and separate the wheat from the chaff. The new strict rule is a step further than an earlier ban that restricts advertisers to link to false stories. However, Facebook also says, that if a page were to stop linking to such fraudulent stories, it might be allowed to run ads once again. Although no hard time limits have been mentioned for the uplifting of the ban.

“If Pages repeatedly share stories marked as false, these repeat offenders will no longer be allowed to advertise on Facebook,” product managers Tessa Lyons and Satwik Shukla said in a blog post.

“This update will help to reduce the distribution of false news which will keep Pages that spread false news from making money.”

Facebook is not the only one taking steps against viral fake news makers. Google has also sensed the seriousness of the issue infecting the whole Internet. The Search Engine added a fact-checking tag earlier this year to curb such misinformation globally. The tags that can be used in all languages are assisted by third-party fact checkers that separate the true and the false. Fake news became a serious issue after US President Donald Trump’s election when it came to light that fake stories were used to sway voters and public opinion.
