When Motorola Mobility was picked up by Lenovo in late 2014, most smartphone enthusiasts were shocked and a bit skeptical about how the brand would go forward. Now, two and a half years down the line, Motorola has not only managed to thrive but also remain relevant driving innovations in the field of smartphones.
One of the major gambles that the company has embarked on is the MOTO Mods concept. Taking over the concept of a modular smartphone system that adapts to the situation Motorola condensed the concept to make it feasible. This has been presented to us in the form of modular projectors, speaker units and extended battery packs and back covers. Most of these modular mods significantly enhance a feature or improve certain aspect of the device, not radically alter it. All this is going to change with the appearance of the EDGE Mod.
The Mod is equipped with RGB LED lights all along its edge, pun intended which can be customised to provide various notification alerts or just to jazz up your MOTO handset. The Mod is being developed by a third-party called Imagine Tech in association with the Motorola’s Development Kit (MDK) partnership ensuring working prototypes and end-to-end compatibility. Imagine Tech has started an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to make the Edge Mod a reality and in-case of successful funding intends to launch the accessory around July of this year.
The mod will be available in two variants, the EDGE Force measuring 125.5 x 73.2 x 5.0mm which apart from adding RGB jazz has an additional 2000mAh battery to improve the standby times. The other option is the EDGE Air measuring 125.5 x 73.2 x 3.5mm which adds a QI module allowing for wireless charging of the device it is attached too. There is also a Shield bumper add on planned if the crowdfunding goals are matched and exceeded. Once attached to your smartphone you can control and customise how the LED’s function via an app. Completely distinct profiles can be created for different notifications like calls, messaging, emails, alarms and reminders and so forth. Once set, the corresponding colour bonanza will light up with the appropriate trigger alert.
The EDGE Mod has a tough durable polycarbonate with a soft finish to make it a pleasing device to hold. Compatibility has been confirmed for the existing Moto Z Play / Force and the upcoming Moto Z 2017 variants in three colours, Midnight Black, Moonlight Silver and Crimson Red. Once the campaign is successfully funded, Imagine Tech has a release window of July 2017 planned for the backers of the campaign followed by retail release for a price tag of ~$70 with backers getting a discount of 15%.
